Rising energy costs putting families at risk for homelessness

Rising energy costs are one of the biggest reasons households across Rainy River District are being put at risk for homelessness, local agencies say.
“The biggest issue in this district which we see around homelessness has to do with the cost of utilities,” said Trudy McCormick, executive director of the Northwest Community Legal Clinic.

Women’s health symposium in works again

Once again, the Women’s Health Symposium is coming to the district.
This year it’s set for Saturday, May 8, and once again will take place at Fort Frances High School and the Townshend Theatre.
There is no cost to attend a day that will be full of education and pampering for women of all ages.

Seniors in Emo staying active

With the size of Canada’s aging population growing annually, seniors across Canada are being encouraged to stay active, both physically and mentally.
According to the Thunder Bay District Health Unit, “Physical activity offers seniors the best option to reduce illness and disability, improve their quality of life, and to live independently longer.”

Supper planned for St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Church in Emo will be holding a St. Patrick’s Day roast beef supper in the church hall next Wednesday (March 17) at 5:30 p.m.
The cost of the supper will be $12 for adults and $6 for children aged six-12 (children five and under are free).
There also will be prizes, a penny table, and live entertainment.

Nestor Falls stages another successful winter carnival

The Nestor Falls Winter Carnival is being declared a “big success” by organizers after running for its 28th year this past weekend.
“I hope everyone had a good time, and I hope they come back next year,” said Howard Dodd, a member of the Nestor Falls Recreation Committee which organizes the annual event that brings in people from far and wide for the weekend.

Night sky program planned

Have you ever wondered how to identify the constellations in the night sky, or where or when to best view the northern lights?
Come spend a family-friendly afternoon with Voyageurs National Park naturalist Kim Reich learning about the night sky this Sunday (March 7) from 2-4 p.m. at the Rainy Lake Visitor Center.

Crossroads to host fundraiser dinner

Crossroads School staff and community members will be holding a spaghetti dinner on Friday, March 12 for the Presenger family who recently lost their home and possessions to a house fire.
There also will be a silent auction at the dinner.
Tickets will be available soon.

Youth soccer to hold registration

The Emo Youth Soccer League will be holding its registration March 8-10 from 7-8 p.m. at the Emo Arena.
The league this year will hold practices and games on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30-7:30 p.m. starting April 27 (if the weather co-operates).

Job fair aims to introduce teens to careers in natural resources

More than 60 youths from across the district were given a glimpse into the lives of conservation officers, biologists, trappers, and many others while attending the “Careers in Natural Resources” event held last Wednesday at the Couchiching multi-use facility.

They all led Robert Tolen of Rainy River to a boxing match he will fight April 3 in Las Vegas, Nev.
Tolen, 37, was listening to the Jason Ellis Faction 28 show on satellite radio when he became interested in some of the fan sites on the Internet.
