Blue whale skeleton to go on display

OTTAWA—The largest animal on the planet will be “the wedding cake” of the Canadian Museum of Nature’s new water gallery when the facility fully reopens in May.
That’s the way exhibition designers are describing a 19-metre skeleton of a blue whale.

‘Tour de Fort’ launches fresh new look

“Tour de Fort” is proud to launch a brand new look.
We’re bidding a fond farewell to our “dancing voyageur” and introducing a fresh and exciting look led by a new logo.
The new logo features the Noden Causeway—the eastern gateway to Fort Frances and the Rainy River District.

Museum hosting March Break activities

The Fort Frances Museum has quite a bit going this month, including March Break activities for kids next week.
On Tuesday, March 16, children will be making clay pictographs.
They first will make a sketch, then transfer the image into leather-hard clay. Pieces then will be fired and returned by area potter Marke Henteleff.
Open to all age groups, there is a $10 materials fee.

Wily fox focus of park program

Is a fox sly or just shy? Can you outrun a fox or jump as high?
Whose sniffer sniffs the best? When a fox is tired, where does it rest?
Join Voyageurs National Park naturalist Megan Wilkins to learn about the fox family this Sunday (March 14) from 2-4 p.m. at the Rainy Lake Visitor Center.
The program is recommended for ages five and up.

St. Olaf College Band appearing at Backus

The Norseman Band of St. Olaf College in Northfield, Mn., conducted by Prof. Paul Niemisto, will be presenting a symphonic band concert this Saturday (March 13) at 7 p.m. at the Backus Community Center Auditorium in International Falls.
Admission is a free-will donation.

Female finally captures nod for best director

LOS ANGELES—Kathryn Bigelow made history last night by becoming the first-ever woman to win the best director trophy at the Academy Awards for “The Hurt Locker,” which also won best picture.
“There’s no other way to describe it, it’s the moment of a lifetime,” said Bigelow.

Movie screenings at library proving popular

Looking for something fun—and free—to do this evening?
How about seeing a movie at the Fort Frances Public Library.
“Fantastic Mr. Fox” is being shown today (March 5) at 6:30 p.m. as part of its monthly “Family Movie Night.”
The film, based on Roald Dahl’s novel of the same name, features the voice talents of George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Bill Murray, and others.

Fort High to stage dark comedy

Muskie Theatre is getting ready to bring the dark musical comedy, “Little Shop of Horrors,” to the Townshend Theatre stage in early April.
“It’s a little bit of a dark comedy,” admitted Fort High teacher Susan De Gagne.
“So it’s way different from what we did last year [‘Aida’]—but that’s good,” she added. “We’re trying out something new.”

Putting their education into practice, Fanshawe College marketing students Adam Armit and Joel Popoff have been working hard to get their video for the Doritos “Viralocity” contest seen by as many people as possible for a shot at winning $250,000.
